DAVID COSTA SORIA

David Costa Soria, of Spanish nationality, I was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, on January 3, 1989, son of Leticia Soria del Castillo Olivares and Joaquín Costa Prat- Married to María Monserrat Davalos Torres, of Paraguayan nationality.

At age 14 I received a scholarship from the SEK School in Madrid to study and train tennis, the sport that I am passionate about, so I put in a lot of work, dedication, and training. During this time, I won various prestigious tournaments, among which I highlight: NIKE AND MARCA, J`Hayber National Tournament in Elche, Apple Bowl International Tournament in Aviles, Miranda del Ebro Tournament. I was selected for the Spanish National Team and summoned for the Winter Cup in Turin, Italy as well as the Copa del Sol in Andorra. Georgi Roumenon and I became the European Champions as a team in Paris whilst representing the Barcelona Royal Tennis Club. I was ranked among the three best players in Spain in the categories of Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18. At age 16 I went to train at the High-Performance Center (Centro Alto Rendimiento – CAR) and VALLDOREIX in Barcelona, to later go to the Pontevedra (Galicia) in order to attend the Technification Center in Sanxenxo.

When I completed my BACHELOR studies, I made the big decision to go to study and compete in the United States with a scholarship at UT Arlington during my first year and then I transferred to SMU in Dallas, Texas where I always played in the 1st and 2nd positions throughout my 4 years of university. This allowed me to obtain an university degree, and above all, to continue competing at a very high level. I was able to go through this process thanks to a Spanish Agency that helped and guided me at all times. This was important considering that various things must be taken into account. For example, different universities have different rules, exam grading systems, VISA processes and sports level evaluation systems among other things. I believe that it is essential to go through the process in advance to be able to choose the university and city that best suits your profile.

My father was key, since he knew the American system from his time as a professional basketball coach. He, along with Aito Garcia Reneses went to meet players and watch training sessions from both universities and the NBA in the summers. I will always be grateful to my parents for the great opportunity they gave me.

During the summers, I worked in University Camps as a coach with Head Coach Carl Neufeld and also connected with several Country Clubs on the East Coast (New York and Connecticut) which allowed me to continue meeting different people and make new friends, get to know /understand the country and work well. I did the same every summer and began to love American life even more every time.

I would like to emphasize that the treatment given to me by the university where I studied was truly incredible and worthy of mention. The new facilities, different types of gyms with the best machines, a physio room, all of the clothes I needed, rackets, strings. In short, the treatment was incredible.

The good thing about it all is that I was able to combine my training, my studies and the competition. I got to know many different universities, cities and states in the USA, and it was the most beautiful thing to be able to make great friends from different parts of the world since your teammates become almost like your brothers and the experience is really something great in every way.

In regard to the academic system, it is very well organized. It allows the university student to choose their class schedule and accommodate it to their training sessions and tournaments. Teachers have a lot of respect for athletes and help you to study your career and compete in your sport so that you can combine both. They also have tutors who help athletes in case they have any difficulty with some subjects. The athletes’ department, the coaches and the teaching staff closely monitor your academic and athletic performance.

In 2012, I graduated from the Southern Methodist University (SMU) in the city of Dallas, Texas, with a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish Philology and Sports Management and as a member of the tennis team. My graduation day was the happiest day of my life. There they were, my parents came from Spain!! Who at all times gave me their unconditional support and I was able to show them the great achievement that I had just made. It was really special to see them as I walked into the Moody Coliseum, the crowded basketball stadium with my diploma in hand, it was a very special and unforgettable day.

Once I graduated, another great challenge began, the next big decision was coming, I would either return to Spain or continue my career path in the United States, not an easy decision.

I decided to stay and as such was required to go through the immigration process to obtain my VISA and work legally in the country. So, that's what I did, I applied for my VISA, it was approved, and I began to work as a private trainer/coach with different families to get their children into a good university. Among the many that I had trained was Gardiner Perotti in Dallas, Texas. We managed to get him to play and graduate from the Southern Methodist University (SMU), as well as Stetson Martz in Los Angeles, California where I obtained my professional coaching degree from the USTA, United States Tennis Association.

In 2014 I had the opportunity to train in the ATP professional tennis circuit with David Marrero who played twice with Fernando Verdasco, it was a truly unique and enriching experience for my professional career.

My VISA documents allowed me to spend 5 years in the United States. At the end of my fifth year, I decided to return to Spain at the same time that my Permanent Residence (Green Card) was processed. Finally, after 11 years living in the United States, initially studying and competing and later developing as a professional, thankfully, the American Embassy had granted me the Green Card and I can say that I lived the American dream in first person.

In 2018, while my American Residency was being processed, I signed up as a coach for the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar in Manacor, working as a Commercial Agent for them.
